Iragorri Valencia, who recently lost his father to coronavirus, an announcement that leaves the party leadership but will not abandon his membership.

In this sense, a communiqué from the community clarified what will be the new path of the outgoing president: “Iragorri expressed that he will visit the regions of the country defending the principles of the party and building a programmatic agenda.”

In his own words, the former minister explained it like this:

“I am leaving the leadership of the Partido de la U because I feel that this new opportunity that life gave me I can take better advantage of it outside a desk, because I believe that the unity that I have defended for so many years is not embedded within walls, but lives in the territories of Colombia ”.

For many analysts, that could represent that the former senator is also considering a presidential candidacy. In his letter he also added that “with this decision he vehemently regains his freedom of opinion” and will give “new directions to his political work.”

In addition, the party says that with all this it is making an “invitation to change the way of doing politics in the country, to seek common interests that unite and add and not continue dividing Colombians.”

In his text, Iragorri gave space to talk about the pandemic. His father Aurelio Iragorri Hormaza, co-founder of the U Party, died last September from COVID-19 and he too was infected.

In that sense, he said that “the mourning of millions extends to those who lost family, friends, dreams, jobs and companies” and added:

“I am convinced that the country that is leaving us the pandemic should remove us from the discussion between yes and no, between war and peace, between left and right; between the past and more past ”.

A few weeks ago, Senator Roy Barreras announced his resignation from the party by criticizing its policies and hours later he was joined by Armando Benedetti.
