The Mobility Secretariat of Bogotá reported that, as of Tuesday, September 22, the restriction for the circulation of private vehicles is restarted, from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 8:30 am and from 4 pm to 7:30 pm

The new measure now includes Saturday, considering the shifts for economic activities contemplated in District Decree 193 of 2020, and the high levels of congestion that occurred on this day before the pandemic.

Private vehicles with three or more passengers (including the driver), hybrid and dedicated vehicles, and owners who voluntarily access the ‘Pico y Placa Solidario’ will be exempt from the measure., which seeks to generate additional resources for the Sitp. The exceptions for vehicles attached to the National Protection Unit, as well as people with disabilities will remain.

“This is a radical change compared to the measure of Pico y Placa that we know and that has been in operation for 20 years in the city, with some variations. Beyond reducing congestion, we want to generate a more efficient use of the private vehicle, bring more resources for the operation of the public transport system, improve the times in the system and make better use of Bogotá’s road infrastructure ”, announced the mayor , Claudia López.

According to the District Secretary for Mobility, Nicolás Estupiñán, “these actions are part of our strategy to increase the average occupancy of private vehicles in the city, which also includes in the future the operation of high occupancy lanes and the linking of technologies that allow you to manage traffic intelligently ”.

After several technical analyzes, the District Department of Mobility (SDM) made the decision to start this vehicle restriction scheme due to the levels of congestion, accidents, effects on public transport and air quality in the 14 main corridors of the capital .

The proposed restriction will be open for public comment during the weekend and will begin next Tuesday, September 22.

Once comments are received from the public and the new decree is signed, people within these excepted groups will be able to register their vehicle to circulate during restricted hours.

During the day today, Mayor López also made another announcement with which the District Secretariat for Mobility will begin to combat the times of congestion caused by the nearly 500 simple crashes that are recorded daily in the city.

Additionally, the entity will have a mobility policy based on data (modeling) and reliable information to make decisions, coming from the Bitcarrier network and an agreement with Waze that allows real-time evaluation of the traffic status.

An air quality pact was also established, signed by the Secretariat, the Ministry of Transportation, and freight carriers, for the scrapping or repowering of more than 12,000 vehicles in the next ten years.
