Aston Villa recovered from two consecutive defeats with a surprising win at the Emirates Stadium (0-3) against Arsenal that slows its rise in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta’s men added another setback at home, where they already fell two weeks ago against Leicester City, and did not sign the good victory achieved last day against Manchester United.
It all started badly for the Gunners when in minute 1 Villa gave the first scare with a goal by John McGinn that canceled the VAR for a positional offside of Ross Barkley.
Despite the warning, Arsenal did not wake up and before half an hour, a play started by Jack Grealish, Villa’s best in the match, ended with a low cross at the far post that was sent to the net between Bukayo Saka and Trezeguet.
Arsenal got to work to come back, but were unable to beat Emiliano Martínez’s goal. The best chances were Alexandre Lacazette, especially a header that the Argentine took him out, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was practically disappeared, as was Willian.
Arteta tried to change the course of the game at halftime, removing Thomas Partey and putting Dani Ceballos, but Arsenal, far from coming back, was thrashed.
Ollie Watking, who already made a triplet to Liverpool several days ago, was the executioner of Arsenal. The English forward first headed a cross from Ross Barkley to make it 0-2 and five minutes later he beat Bernd Leno behind after a deep pass from Grealish.
The loss is the toughest at home for Arsenal since December last year, when they lost 3-0 to Manchester City still without Arteta on the bench. The Gunners go to the international break in eleventh position in the table, with twelve points, the same as City. Villa straightens their situation and places sixth, with 15 points, three behind the leader, Leicester City, but with one game less.
