Bolívar achieved worldwide fame for playing a character called ‘The Embrace of the Serpent’ Karamatake, in charge of guiding the ethnobotanist Richard Evans through the jungle in search of the yakruna, a plant that would give him back the ability to dream.
The actor, thanks to the film, was in the most important film awards galas in the world, including the Academy Awards in 2016, and the Cannes and San Sebastián film festivals, among others.
Fame, however, did not bring him a great fortune in life and, on the contrary, he had to go through economic difficulties, as EL TIEMPO related in a 2016 article.
“After the film I live with what I’m doing with you, with fame, with photos; some throw me a ticket of 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 pesos, ”Bolívar said at the time.
For his leading role in The Embrace of the Serpent, Bolívar signed a contract for three months and 10 million pesos, of which, he said, 3 million were discounted for health and pension.
“On television, everyone notices the prizes, but the sad thing is that poor children – who tingle in the Amazon – approach me and tell me: “Don Antonio, give me a gift for my bread that I have not eaten,” and I do not have it; people think I’m full of money, ”Bolívar complained at the time.
