In the plenary session of the Senate on Tuesday, a petition for a motion of censure would be filed against the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo.
The appeal was announced by Polo Senator Jorge Enrique Robledo, who said he had the support of several congressmen “from opposition parties” to President Iván Duque and some representatives to the Chamber.
According to Robledo, the motion of censure is motivated “by serious violations of the law committed by this government, in what has to do with the fact that the US troops that today are operating in Colombia illegally.”
“We have a minister who misses the truth, who manipulates things, who induces the Government to act of prevaricate, but also who, trampling over the dignity of the Senate, said that the senators of the Republic had made decisions that we had never taken” Robledo said.

A few days ago, the head of the Defense portfolio announced that the United States mission that is providing advice in Colombia had continued its work, after a letter from the former president of Congress Lidio García on the matter was known.
In the letter, García reported the support of 69 senators for this mission, but days after the letter was known, the former president of Congress asked Holmes Trujillo to rectify what was said.

The opposition parties to the national government insist that this mission should have received the endorsement of the Senate to carry out its advisory work in Colombia, but the Executive and most of the coalition senators say that this step was not necessary.

The issue is in the hands of the Council of State, which must rule on a tutelage that was presented in this regard and that would define whether this mission should have received endorsement from the Senate or not.
After presenting the petition for the motion of censure, there must be a debate in the Senate in which the reasons for the appeal and the Minister’s explanations will be heard. Days later there must be a vote to define whether it is accepted or not. In case of success, the official must leave his position.
