A tragedy occurred early this Sunday in Santa Marta, after an avalanche fell on houses in the San Martín sector and caused the death of a 72-year-old woman.
According to reports from the authorities, a 46-year-old man who tried to help the victim was injured, and around 40 families were left adrift due to the damage caused by the landslide.
“What happened was the landslide of the upper part of the hill. As a result of that landslide, which occurred around 5:30 am, several homes were affected, a 72-year-old woman lost her life and a 46-year-old man who tried to help her was injured and is already receiving medical attention, ”he told Tracking.co Colonel Karlotz Omaña, director of the Civil Defense in Magdalena.
“At the moment there are 40 affected families, that is, approximately a total of 120 people. The affected families are being offered food and preventing them from entering their homes, ”added the official.
The mayor Virna Johnson arrived in the area where the damage occurred, who explained that “we are going to give rental assistance to each family and we are going to give them food and snacks today so that they can be calm.”
“We are in communication with the National Risk Management Unit, because we are going to hold a District Risk Management Council in which we will evaluate all the possibilities to solve the relocation of these people who have been living at the foot of the hill,” added the Mandatory Samaria.
After the District Risk Management Council, actions will be defined to prevent a greater tragedy, and among the activities to be carried out could be the controlled detonation of the hill “because in the morning material has continued to shed.”
Currently in the San Martín sector there is a presence of Civil Defense, Firefighters, Red Cross, Police and the Office of Risk Management.
