The initiative has gained strength in recent days because Álvaro Uribe considers that the shift should go from 48 hours a day to 40 hours. This, he says, would benefit workers because they could share more time with the family.
This idea has not been well received in the government of Iván Duque, who in the last hours described the initiative as “inconvenient” in the circumstances facing the country, among other things, because it would raise the labor costs of companies.
“A measure of this type must be analyzed in the context of a broader approach to the structure of labor costs and at an ideal time according to the market situation,” said President Duque, quoted by the newspaper La República.
Despite the position of the head of state on the initiative, it already has a path in Congress and there are only two debates left for it to be approved. However, Blu Radio reported, there is an instruction from Duque so that in the discussion in the House of Representatives the overthrow of this initiative by Álvaro Uribe is promoted.
This attitude of the president goes against the intention of former President Uribe, who in recent days has been in favor of reducing working hours in Colombia. Last Thursday, for example, he posted on his Twitter account an image promoting his idea.
This graph shows that Colombia is one of the countries with the longest working hours in the region, above Brazil (40 hours of work per week), Uruguay (40), Argentina (35), Ecuador (40) and Chile (30).

For Néstor Morales, director of Mañanas Blu, this is a new fight between Uribe and Duque due to the lack of support for this type of project.
“They are splitting blankets on more and more important issues. For former President Uribe, the proposal to reduce the hours of the working day is important because he has a referendum in Camino, remember that one thing is tied to the other, ”Morales said.
Along the same lines, Blu Radio analyst Felipe Zuleta also considers that Duque and Uribe are distancing themselves a lot. “What happens is that the former president starts the campaign, for whoever it is, for whoever Uribe says. I believe that the Duque government has distanced itself a lot from former President Uribe, ”he said.
Álvaro Uribe’s proposal to reduce working hours in Colombia
Uribe’s proposal focuses on reducing the working day so that Colombians have more free time to share with their family and for their personal projects. However, there has been criticism about the cost this could represent for entrepreneurs.
According to Mac Master, if this idea is valid, companies will have to assume an average weekly cost of 85,000 pesos per person.
