Álvaro Uribe gave an interview to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and in it he once again made it clear that he is concerned about the leadership that President Iván Duque projects in sensitive issues for Colombian society such as the murder of social leaders.

The former president had already spoken in that regard during a dialogue he held with a Cauca media outlet, and stressed his request to the current government in the interview for Spain.

“The government has to show stronger leadership. Wherever a social leader is murderedThe Minister of the Interior or Defense would have to arrive immediately, show his rejection, organize with the Armed Forces the capture of those responsible and offer the reward. The Government has to be more visible in that, because unfortunately that speech has been taken over by the opposition, “said the leader of the Democratic Center.

Another issue in which the former senator stated that he would act differently from Duque is related to the eradication of illicit crops.

“How do you expect there to be no violence in a country that still has around 200,000 hectares of coca? With all my appreciation to President Duque, I am clear about what the Government would do: first it would have accelerated the fumigation and would be paying the farmers to protect the jungle“Uribe added.

The former president also regretted, as he has done in his last public appearances, that his reputation is “very deteriorated”, and recognized that diplomatic measures and economic sanctions against the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro have been of no use.
