The offensive of the Nicolás Maduro regime to free the Barranquilla Alex Saab, imprisoned in Cape Verde, it is not only judicial.
TIME established that, on December 26, decided to promote him through the diplomatic ladder to be covered by international treaties and agreements, including what is granted by the West African Court of Justice (ECOWAS), which ordered Cape Verde to give him house arrest.
In 2010, Saab was just another contractor in Venezuela. Then he became the regime’s supposed special envoy to get food and medicine in the face of the pandemic.

But TIME established that now he holds the position of alternate permanent representative of Venezuela to the African Union.
The information is also enshrined in a new statement issued by one of his many lawyers (Rutsel Martha), which warns that the new position grants him immediate diplomatic immunity.
“Accreditation to the African Union is important because of that organization’s stance on the immunity of heads of state and other senior officials,” The lawyer points out in the document in which, in addition, he contextualizes the legal basis for the immunity that, in his opinion, Saab would now hold.

“What is clear is that the African Union considers the immunity of high-ranking officials to be something that should be taken seriously. It is therefore logical that the African Union expects all its member states, including Cape Verde, to respect the international status of government representatives accredited to the organization. Among them is now mr. Alex Saab, “adds the document.
What the rectum does not specify is whether said immunity has retroactive effects, since Saab completes six months in detention in Cape Verde, after the United States requested his capture and subsequent extradition.
EL TIEMPO had access to the document in which Venezuela makes the appointment and notifies Cape Verde of the diplomatic news.
Now I knowe hopes that Cape Verde, which refused to grant him house arrest, will respond to this diplomatic move.
