The French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) was penalized by the Tour de France judges with 20 seconds for improper provisioning, for which he lost the yellow jersey of the race in favor of the British Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott).
The French cyclist received a can of water in the last 20 kilometers of the stage between Gap and Privas, something that the regulations prohibit, which sanction him with a 20-second penalty in general.
Alaphilippe led the general from the second stage in Nice with 4 seconds over the British Adam Yates and now he is 16th, 16 seconds behind the new leader.
“These are things that happen. It’s an official decision. I can’t do anything,” said the Deceuninck-Quick Step rider as soon as he crossed the finish line in Privas.
“It was a very long and boring stage, with a very nervous ending. I had to be focused to keep the jersey and try to win with Sam Bennett in the sprint,” he noted.
“Tomorrow I will get back on my feet and try to get it back,” said the Frenchman, who has worn the yellow jersey in three days, after 14 in 2019.
