Paradoxically, that photograph of him, a young man used to posing before the cameras, was the one that changed his life.

“It was a horrible mistake. I apologized to the people I owed, to the lady and her son ”,
says Mauricio.

I was having a good time, but I had a mistake: enjoying more than I should

Behind that photograph of his arrest there is a long history that, he acknowledges, was marked by partying, madness and excesses.

Mauricio had arrived in Cartagena 15 days ago after spending a few days working as a model in Brazil. Her career was skyrocketing: she received contracts for catalogs in different Latin American countries and she was the image of recognized national brands.

During those days, he stayed at the house of one of his best friends, where he came to rest and meet. It was the first time I had visited the heroic city, it coincided with the Independence festivities and the National Beauty Contest, celebrations that were given to have fun and go partying.

In front of the house of the poet Jorge Artel tonight the edict of the neighborhood will be read that gives free rein to the rumbón that extends until tomorrow in all the streets.

During the Independence festivities, parades are held in Cartagena, among other festive activities.

That Monday, November 18, Mauricio left with people he hardly knew in the middle of so much party. By noon, he says, he was completely drunk.

“I was having a good time, but I had a mistake: enjoying more than I should. I began to drink a lot, I would receive liquor to whoever gave me. In one of those, my chip was flipped. I do not know what happened. I think they drugged me with something weird, ”he says.

Disorder and escape

Mauricio says that it started with a disorder in which he felt that there were people who wanted to kill or harm him. So he grabbed his backpack and ran out of the store where he was drinking.

According to his account, he was running away in search of his friend’s house, who was not with him at the time. He ran through the streets of Cartagena, asking for help; However, his appearance – he confesses – scared people, who chose to avoid it.

People didn’t help me because at that time I looked like a street dweller

“People didn’t help me because at that moment I looked like a street dweller, that’s how I saw myself, like a madman. Nobody wanted to help me. No car would stop me ”, dice.

Then, in an oversight, he got into the passenger seat of a man’s vehicle, who yelled him out of the car and shook him to wake him up from his disorder. Mauricio kept running through the streets in anguish in the middle of “his bad trip.”

Until he found two women and a child, whom he would have yelled at for help.

“I told the girl to help me, but what I did was get into her car, not as a co-pilot but in the driver’s seat. It was like a desperate reaction to be taken away, ”he says.

Remember that the 22-year-old girl got out of the car scared, while he started the vehicle in the middle of her disorder.

After a few seconds in the car, he heard the voice of a child in the back stalls: “Hey, where are we going, what about my mom?”

I listened to the child, I felt bad, there I kind of reacted, but I didn’t know what was happening or what I was doing

Public derision

Hearing the voice, Mauricio says he stopped. He got out of the car and there were police around him.

“I listened to the child, I felt bad, there I kind of reacted, but I didn’t know what was happening or what I was doing. He was not right about what he was doing. In that condition he couldn’t handle anything. It was not a movie rescue as the Police say ”, bill.

Mauricio says that his next memory is being handcuffed in a Police CAI, with dozens of people taking photos of him and making fun of him, so he once again lost control and received electric shocks from the agents.

His mistake became the gossip of his guild, the Police nicknamed him ‘Pelucas’ and it was the moment that he was not able to be aware of what he had done.

“I did not know what was happening. They even injected me with painkillers. He was mad. I don’t remember anything about what happened to me ”, points out.

I did not plan anything, they gave me things that they should not give me, my chip was changed. I apologize

But when he tried to calm down, Mauricio was accused of theft, kidnapping and damage to someone else’s property.

“I didn’t plan anything, they gave me things that they shouldn’t give me, my chip was changed. I apologize. It was something he was not aware of. I was not in my five senses. It was a horrible mistake, ”he laments.

After a few days, Mauricio emerged from arrest, he continued for a few months in Cartagena to see how the process progressed. He contacted the boy’s family to apologize for his mistake.

However, what happened went viral and his life was a torment.

“Everything became an embarrassing mess. It went viral, it was featured in all the country’s media. They subjected me to a public derision “, dice.

For months locked in a room in Cartagena, Mauricio says he fell into depression when he was singled out on the news as a criminal. “I felt as if they called me a Pablo Escobar from Arauca,” he says.

Get ahead

Mauricio, 28, recognizes the mistake he made due to the excesses of the rumba, but – just as he says he was subjected to public scorn – he also regrets that the doors of a career that he looked promising were slammed shut.

The agency in which he worked, Stock Model, did not have him again. When he started applying for jobs at other companies, Internet searches showed him as a high-caliber criminal, a situation that seems unfair.

He tells that he was medicated for depression and it is the hour that he continues to wait for a window to open to continue his career.

In the pandemic, he has survived on savings, small jobs that he manages to get and the help of his parents. “They crossed me out of all the agencies, nobody gives me a job. My career was damaged, ”says the also young Business Administration student, who only lacks a degree.

Regarding his mess with the courts, he says that after asking for forgiveness and acknowledging that he represented danger, he did not receive subpoenas again nor has he been required by the authorities. Lawyers have not given him a reason for his process either.

He also considers that it was a lesson for his life, since it is a mistake that marked him and from which he already learned.

“I want that part of my life to be erased, of that mistake, that they see my talent, that they focus on me. I want that chapter to be closed, that they give me the opportunity. I am still the ‘pelao’ dreamer who came from Arauca to work diligently ”, he says.
