A police mayor identified as Darwin Hernández died in the middle of a shootout between the security forces and alleged assailants that appeared on Saturday afternoon, confirmed the commander of the Cali Metropolitan Police, General Manuel Antonio Vásquez.
The exchange of shots was registered at about 2:30 pm on Calle 29 with Carrera 40A, in the La Independencia neighborhood, east of the capital of Valle.
According to preliminary information, the alleged criminals had committed a theft in the El Limonar neighborhood, the Police began the persecution until they were cornered in La Independencia.
“In the east of the city of Cali, a policeman loses his life when he came in pursuit of two people who were mobilizing in a vehicle. They were captured in flagrante delicto,” General Vásquez said.
“This is the sacrifice, the commitment of all the Colombian policemen who, like our hero, Mayor Darwin Hernández, offer their own lives for the tranquility of all the inhabitants,” he stressed.

Residents of the sector affirm that authorities and alleged criminals were shot at, seriously injuring the uniformed man, attached to the El Guabal Police Station.
The officer was transferred to the Carlos Carmona hospital, where he would finally die due to the severity of his injuries.
Regarding the men who confronted the agent, the officer assured that “one is injured and is being treated at a hospital. Apparently he is stable. The other is in the process of being prosecuted.”
“We have reports of alleged victims of theft in this same sector. The investigation is progressing and it will have to officially ratify these testimonies to consolidate this body of evidence and demonstrate the responsibility of the alleged murderers,” he said.
