The former president and leader of the Centro Democrático party, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, believes that Uribismo should continue to lead the country after the 2022 elections, through a coalition with sectors related to the political ideologies of the movement that he presides.

The former Colombian president spoke with the newspaper El Tiempo and urged the current government to communicate correctly and “add” to the almost two years remaining for President Iván Duque Márquez. Likewise, Uribe clarified one of the rumors that has circulated the most around his family: The politician assured that Tomás and Jerónimo Uribe have no plans to aspire to the House of Nariño or to a popularly elected position in the next elections.

When the former president was asked about his alleged interest in participating in the 2022 parliamentary elections, Uribe said that he withdrew this year due to “commitments to the family.” However, he did not give much information on the matter and said that, for the moment, he is interested in recovering his reputation and good repute. “I will continue to agitate the thesis discussion and promote new leaderships for Colombia,” said Uribe Vélez.

Recently, the former head of state assured wanting to repeal the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), however, public opinion assures that this proposal is part of the political discourse that would ‘open up the field’ in the 2022 elections. Uribe said that this initiative is not a political speech “Because it has been for many years. Let’s go back to the plebiscite, to the campaign of President Duque ”. The former senator said that regarding the repeal of the JEP, there could be coalitions that “support” him in that project.

When investigating Uribe Vélez about his position in the United States elections, he assured that during his term he always supported a bipartisan policy. However, he did not clarify what his intention was.

Faced with the issue of the controversy related to Francisco “Pacho” Santos, Uribe described as “unfair what they have done with him.” The former president of the Colombians said that Pacho has always been honest and what he did was “advocate for a bipartisan policy.” Likewise, he considers that it is normal for Colombian political leaders such as Juan Manuel Santos, Maria Fernanda Cabal and Gustavo Petro to reveal their political interests in the United States, however “the Colombian government does not find that right and President Duque always proceeded with transparency and impartiality, like Ambassador Francisco Santos ”.

What Uribe augurs for 2022

Uribe Vélez views the 2022 elections with “concern” because he says that the old socialism was more frank and “the new ones are underhanded.” The recently ex-convict says that before he spoke of socialization and means of production; but now they seek to discredit businessmen. Former President Uribe referred to how he sees his “power” in the next presidential elections: “I am subjected to a very large impact on my reputation, which hurts me and I will continue to make every effort to show that I am honorable,” the politician said to Bogota newspaper.

When referring to the possible presidential nomination of today’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, Uribe said that it would be imprudent to comment on the matter, however, he has told Holmes: ‘Carlos, you have won battles in Congress for your preparation, your eloquence, your transparency, but you have to win them in public opinion. Not always the one who does well in Congress does well in opinion. ‘

Finally, the former right-wing president revealed that his party, the Democratic Center, or as it is colloquially known, ‘Uribismo’, will face the other parties at the polls with a “Political committee in the party that says how the Congress and presidential candidacies are going to be projected”, with which he argued that the creation of a coalition is essential.
