Álex Saab: African Court adjourns hearing on his freedom – Investigative Unit

This Tuesday was a key day for the Barranquilla Álex Saab, appointed figurehead of Nicolás Maduro. The West African Court of Justice had scheduled a hearing to determine whether to order Cape Verde his immediate release.

Before that instance – which Saab’s defense qualifies as the OAS of the African countries – they were claiming that it already completed 10 days of illegal detention due to expiration of terms.

(We invite you to read: Why is Álex Saab already preparing suitcases?)

Indeed, Saab, prosecuted in the United States for corruption linked to the Maduro regime, was captured on June 13 and the deadline for Cape Verde to define its judicial situation has already expired.

In fact, as TIME revealed, Cape Verde defines his house arrest while solving the merits of the extradition request from a federal court in Miami.

But his legal team, led by former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón, was sure his release would be ordered on Tuesday.

Cape Verde managed to have the hearing postponed to November 30.

Cape Verde defends itself

A hearing on ‘violation of procedural guarantees’ was already ready, which they also sustained, with the argument of illegal detention, for being a ‘special agent’ of Maduro.

In addition, they insisted on the alleged torture to which he has been subjected and inhuman treatment.

But the official spokesmen of the government of Cape Verde managed to have the hearing postponed, adding that they did not have sufficient elements to respond to the concerns that the defense of Saab raised before that court.

Álvaro Pulido, a Saab partner, is also in the sights of the United States.

Postponement

EL TIEMPO established with local sources that the hearing was postponed to November 30.

(See here all the articles of the Investigative Unit of EL TIEMPO) The deadline will allow Cape Verde to define the issue of house arrest and ward off any attempt by Saab to go free in other ways.
