The commander of the Cundinamarca Police, Colonel Cesar Ovidio Castro, spoke out on the complaint of the deaths of at least 9 people who were detained at the CAI of San Mateo, in Soacha, in events that occurred in that building on 4 last september.

According to the institution, that day there was a fire caused by the inmates. During the events, one person died and seven more have died to date as a result of the serious injuries they suffered.
The Government of Cundinamarca ruled on this same incident at the time, which informed the Military Criminal Justice of these facts.
Colonel Castro reported that there was a riot by relatives of the detainees, who wanted to be allowed to visit and, simultaneously, there was a riot of the detainees.
However, this Tuesday, Councilor Diego Cancino denounced that there are already 9 deaths due to the events of September 4 and that “the investigations have not taken place.”
According to Cancino, a case of police abuse occurred at the San Mateo station. That day, he added, there were 20 young people who were being “mistreated” and “tortured” and who were not receiving food. He points out that the police officers “let those boys set on fire.”

“The detainees started the fire of mattresses and that generated a fire, in which unfortunately these people were burned,” said Colonel Cesar Ovidio Castro, who assured that in this situation, the police reacted and rescued the injured.

The high official points out that 7 of the wounded were taken to the Soacha Cardiovascular Hospital and four more to the Simón Bolívar Hospital in Bogotá.
Colonel Castro explained on Blu Radio that due to the same material on the mattresses the fire spread rapidly and that this was what ended up affecting the inmates themselves, who in the mutiny started the fire.
“From the very moment, as Commander, I made known what had happened. This activity has been public, “added the high official, who insisted that” information has never been hidden, “what has been is information,” and denied that there was negligence of the uniformed officers to assist the detainees.

Yesterday, in a statement, the Cundinamarca Police said that “they immediately proceeded to control the fire, provide first aid” and evacuate the injured people.
The institution specified that “Of the 11 people involved in this event, 8 have died to date. In addition, 2 are in custody with medical treatment and one is still hospitalized. “
“We made available to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Military Criminal Justice and the corresponding investigations were opened,” insisted the colonel, who assured that on the same day of the events, the CTI of the Prosecutor’s Office began the investigations to establish how they occurred and that currently It is under investigation by a prosecutor from the life unit.
In the statement, the Cundinamarca Police also states: “Within the framework of the Comprehensive Policy of Police Transparency, through the Office of Internal Disciplinary Control, a disciplinary investigation was opened to establish the circumstances of time, manner and place, of the acts”.
