If nothing extraordinary happens, on January 20 the White House will have a new tenant, Joe Biden. He and his wife, Jill, will settle there with their two German Shepherds: Major and Champ.
In 2008, the Biden family purchased a German shepherd from a kennel after Joe was elected vice president. The Bidens decided to call him Champ to remember the politician’s father, who used to say to him, “Get up, Champ,” when there were difficulties in life.
In 2018, Joe and Jill decided to adopt another German Shepherd from a shelter, the Delaware Humane Association. They called him Major.
“To have participated in Major’s trip is an honor. A happy ending is always the outcome we strive for when animals come into our care. Every displaced animal deserves a second chance. Major’s story shows the power of possibility: A shelter dog who once fought for his life will be living in the White House in a few months. Not all the animals in the shelter share Major’s fortune. We sincerely hope her story highlights the importance of animal adoption and inspires the people of this great nation, “the Delaware Hummane Association said online.
Major was part of a litter of dogs that had been intoxicated. When Ashley, the president-elect’s daughter, found out, she asked her father to help. And that’s how the animal came to live with the family.
“Once we posted asking for help, Joe Biden heard about them and reached out right away. The rest is history, ”said the association when Major was adopted.
Major will be the first dog adopted from a shelter to live in the seat of government. Lyndon Johnson also had a dog that his daughter found at a gas station.
With Champ and Major, the tradition of the ‘first mascot of the nation’ returns in the White House. According to White House historian Andrew Hager, for more than 100 years the rulers of the United States have had some animal company.
The tradition was only interrupted by Donald Trump, who assured when they offered him one that he “did not have time” to walk it. “How would I see myself walking with a dog in the White House?” He said.
Before Champ and Major, the Obamas had Bo and Sunny, and the Bushes had Barney, a Scottish terrier who became famous for his videos.
