An outrageous case of animal abuse was registered in the municipality of La Estrella, Antioquia,
when two men killed a possum with shovels and stomps.
The fact was recorded in a video that circulates on social networks and that has unleashed the outrage and rejection of the community at the violence with which the animal was attacked by citizens.
In the recording, these people are seen chasing the opossum, which tries to flee the attack, but is repeatedly beaten by a young man and then killed by another man by stepping on it several times.
Juan Sebastián Abad, mayor of La Estrella (south of the Aburrá Valley), confirmed that this case of animal abuse took place in the La Tablaza Juan XXIII sector and that he already gave orders to the authorities so that those responsible pay for this fact.
“They send me a video where I can see how two guys mistreat and kill a possum. That is not fair, that is angry. For this reason, I immediately asked the Police to take forceful and quick actions. We are verifying the names of the people in order to establish all the legal mechanisms against them. I will personally establish said complaint “, he asserted.
“Possums feed on fruits and we have to understand that before we took over their place”, He declared.
Abad called for the protection of animals regardless of whether they are domestic or wild. “We all have the same rights,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Police reported that it attended to the case that occurred around 9 in the morning. “The alleged offender acknowledged the fact taking into account that there is a video on social networks. For this reason, this event will be made known to the GELMA Group of the Prosecutor’s Office so that it can initiate the investigation ex officio why the citizen violated article 339A of the law 599 of the year 2.000 “.
This is the video of the brutal attack (strong images).
Crimes against the life and physical and emotional integrity of animals, be they companion, wild, vertebrate or exotic, among others, can carry prison sentences between 12 to 36 months and special disability of 1 to 3 years to be able to exercise the profession, trade, trade or possession related to animals and fines of 5 to 60 legal minimum wages in force.
A little over a month ago a similar event was recorded against an individual of this species, but in the Pacific region. Therefore, wildlife experts called for the care of these animals, which have been displaced from their habitat for different reasons, such as agricultural, mining and urban expansion.
According to Víctor Vélez, marine biologist and wildlife professional of the Environmental Sub-Directorate of the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, “opossums are essential for the maintenance of ecosystems and among many of the functions they have are to help control populations of rodents, small reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, and are effective seed dispersers, which favors the expansion of vegetation.
