The CNN network reported that after the US elections, 61-year-old Mark Meadows told relatives that he had contracted COVID-19.
He tested positive for the test that was carried out on Wednesday, the day after the elections, The New York Times reported.
Meadows was among the 150 people who gathered in the early hours of Wednesday at the White House when Donald Trump delivered a speech to his top officials and supporters, CNN detailed.
The chain assured that Trump’s chief of staff does not know how he got the virus, but that he was on a trip with the president last weekend, attended the election party at the White House on Tuesday, and “entered close contact with members of the family ”of the head of state.
“White House officials are now alarmed, given that Meadows has been around other staff members while it is potentially contagious,” detailed CNN, citing an aide as the source of that information.
The alert has to do with several senior officials of the Trump administration contracting COVID-19 in recent weeks; including the president himself and his wife, Melania.
Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and several political advisers are among the dozen White House officials who have been infected since the beginning of October.
The United States is the country hardest hit by the pandemic. More than 9.7 million people were infected and some 236,000 died.
