“It has rained very hard on the island of San Andrés and Providencia,” said Yolanda González, director of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies-Ideam- that is present in the area.
That heavy rain has been reflected, according to González, in the fact that in the last four days it has rained for about a month on the island.
“For example, yesterday it rained 136 millimeters (mm) in San Andrés when the average for the month is 315 mm. In Providencia it rained 136 mm, while in the month the record is 284mm,” he explained in dialogue with RCN Radio.

The director of Ideam, who has been on the island for several days monitoring the passage of Hurricane Eta, which yesterday afternoon became a tropical storm again and today is a tropical depression, assured that the conditions of heavy rain will continue in the coming days.
He added that the Caribbean Sea is experiencing one of the most intense hurricane seasons in the last decade. In addition to the influence that this phenomenon has in Colombia, it is added that the country is going through the second winter season and the La Niña phenomenon.

“These events converge and make the country face one of the times with the highest volume of rain,” said the official.
He pointed out that the predictions at this time (may change) because the La Niña phenomenon will be present, he even warned that variations could be registered in the driest season that occurs at the beginning of the year.
