Jorge Luis Solano Vega, representative of the Municipal Table of Victims, was attacked with a firearm in the Miraflores neighborhood, near the main park of the municipality of Ocaña, in Norte de Santander. Several armed men came to the home of the social leader and shot him repeatedly.

Relatives and neighbors came to the scene to take him to the Emiro Quintero Cañizares Hospital, in Ocaña, but the victim had no vital signs. The social leader had received death threats against his life and it had bodyguards and a van from the National Protection Unit (UNP).
Samir Casadiego, mayor of Ocaña, rejected the murder and urged the authorities to capture those responsible.

Solano Vega’s strong criticism of public officials and his commitment to social causes caused him several death threats during his career as a social leader. Also, he was detained on several occasions by armed groups while he was traveling in the Catatumbo subregion.

The Ombudsman’s Office asked the UNP to take extreme care measures for people at risk.
“Jorge Solano Vega, social leader from Ocaña, Norte de Santander, was today a victim of a policy of hatred and intolerance in our country. He was murdered in his own home. Interinstitutional State management is urgent for an effective protection of support to impacted communities, “said the Ombudsman through his Twitter account.
