Tropical storm Eta hits the Caribbean region hard

The tropical cyclone is located, according to the National Hurricane Center near 15.2N, with maximum winds of 65 kilometers per hour and a minimum central pressure estimated at 1005 mb. Eta is moving west at 13 knots (24 km / h) with a high possibility of strengthening during the next few hours. The system is located 534 km from Punta Gallinas, 477 km from Barranquilla, 647 km from Providencia and 714 km from San Andrés.

Ideam recommends maintaining alerts in the continental area as well, mainly in hillside areas where flash floods, landslides and streams are possible, special attention deserves sectors of La Guajira, Norte de Cesar and Magdalena, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba and Urabá. Also in areas of the Andean region, in the departments of Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Chocó and Valle del Cauca, where heavy rainfall is expected.

Likewise, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies reported that between November 2020 and April 2021, rainfall is forecast with records higher than the reference climatology for the period 1981-2010, and increases in rainfall are forecast in the Caribbean regions, 60%, Andean between 10% and 40%; in the Eastern Plains from 20% to 50%; in the north-central Pacific region, between 10% and 40%, and in the north of the Amazon, from 10% to 30%, due to the persistence of cooling over the waters of the tropical Pacific Ocean.
