The purchase of hoods, masks and overalls, used by vandals to carry out destruction, on November 21 of last year in Medellín, ended up sealing the fate of Andrés Felipe Vanegas, alias Uriel, third in command of the Eln’s Western War Front .
The guerrilla A key part of the terrorist outpost in the cities, it was annihilated 8 days ago, in an operation of the Public Force in Chocó, after an intelligence work of at least 12 months.

From there, he launched threats to “the oligarchy” and took center stage, last September, when he came out to claim the destruction of the CAI: “Our urban militia participated as one more (…) We must end those centers of torture and death” .
‘Uriel’ was unaware that intelligence men from the Police were following one of his pupils.
The student, from a prestigious university, who bought the hoods and overalls for the vandals, had been recorded weeks ago, leaving the jungle area of Nóvita (Chocó).
The tattoo and the photos
Intelligence officers followed in his footsteps and later located him in Buenaventura, where he took a speedboat to go back into the jungle.
“This time, I was going to take ‘Uriel’ part of the day of riots, in which they destroyed an electronic teller machine and installed potato bombs on Barranquilla Avenue, in Medellín,” says an official.

In addition, he came with a new follower: a slim woman of medium height, brown hair, light eyes, and a pronounced tattoo on her back.
That day, ‘Uriel’, who called himself “an intellectual of the petty bourgeoisie”, was officially infiltrated.
Another function of Uriel was to wash the face of drug trafficking to Eln commanders, with their pseudo-political speeches
Thanks to the assiduous visits of the woman – who became one of the guerrilla’s partners – an infiltrator located all the camps. There he met young people from the area and university students who came from Pereira, Medellín and Bogotá to receive ‘militia workshops’, the seedbed for urban cells.

For two years, ‘Uriel’ was commissioned by the general leadership of the ELN to recruit young people by technological means, to link them to the clandestine structure: ‘virtual revolutionary work and study collectives’.

“Its mission was outlined in the scheme of ‘popular uprisings’, which seeks to transfer the confrontation to 10 cities: Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Cúcuta, Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja, Popayán and Neiva ”explained an intelligence officer.
In fact, the ELN leadership has already admitted that the death of ‘Uriel’ was a hard blow; and that, in effect, he was in charge of the rebellion and uprising in arms of the popular youth, through social networks.
But the authorities say that it fulfilled another function: “To wash the drug trafficking face of Eln commanders, with their pseudo-political speeches.”
The infiltrator was intermittently in the bowels of the Western War Front for several months.

EL TIEMPO exclusively obtained several photos that he took, to identify the other leaders and the area in which ‘Uriel’ was moving, who used the water networks that pass through Nóvita, Istmina and Condoto (Chocó) to move.
In the images, which show how far the infiltrator went, you can see Ogli Ángel Padilla, head of ‘Uriel’ and right hand of alias Pablito, a member of the Central Command (Coce), who has opposed the talks with the Government. ‘Uriel’ also appears in a hammock, surrounded by indigenous children, and ‘Coronel’, a dog that was stolen in an armed incursion against a military patrol.

“Where that and another dog was, the probability was very high of finding alias Uriel”, relates another of the researchers.
In parallel, intelligence men began to move through the area, to follow up on shipments of supplies for students, communication antennas, solar panels, communication radios, and computers that ‘Uriel’ used to stay active in the social networks, give workshops and enter clandestine stations.
“We knew that their weakness was the entry of students and logistical contacts to the camps. Therefore, the student was the key piece to reach him
Reward and grave
Investigators determined that ‘Uriel’ received young people from the age of 12 in his camps. In addition, that he had indigenous children and children of guerrillas as shields. For this reason, the alert issued by the Military Forces on the day of the operation, about the presence of minors.

At that moment they decided to intercept the student and offer him the reward of 500 million pesos so that he could tell which camp of those already identified ‘Uriel’ was going to be in last weekend.
With the coordinates in hand, notice was given to President Iván Duque and the Joint Operations Command (CCOES).
“We knew that their weakness was the entry of students and logistical contacts to the camps. For this reason, the student was the key piece to get to him, protecting the minors, ”said an officer who supervised the operation.
This newspaper obtained audios in which guerrillas lament Uriel’s death: “Out there regretting what happened, erre” (…) Yes, very hard “.
