Eduardo Bejarano, son of Jesús Antonio Bejarano, professor at the National University and former peace councilor during the government of César Gaviria, spoke, this Friday, October 30, at the recognition meeting led by the Truth Commission.
Two representatives of the Farc, Carlos Antonio Lozada and Mauricio Jaramillo, were also present at the event; the rector of the National University, Dolly Montoya, and other members and teachers of this institution.
In 21 years, and after many tributes to my father, this is the first time that we begin to see a hope of truth and justice about his murder, said Eduardo Bejarano.
Bejarano insisted that it is necessary for the FARC to tell the complete truth about the murder of his father.
“I knocked on the doors of the Prosecutor’s Office insistently looking for the truth and those doors were never opened. Those doors are now being opened by the Truth Commission and the Special Jurisdiction for Peace ”.
According to El Espectador, Eduardo Bejarano took the floor after Carlos Antonio Lozada, one of the leaders of the now political party and signatory of the letter sent to the JEP, at the end of September, in which they recognized the murder of this teacher and economist.
Lozada previously recognized that he was the one who gave the order for the murder and assumed responsibility for the defunct guerrilla in the crime. At the same time, he apologized to the family, friends, academics and intellectuals of the National University.
We do not have a convincing explanation for this fact, hence the feeling of shame, of wanting to return time so that something like this would not happen. From the depths of our convictions we ask for forgiveness, convinced that reconciliation is the only path that remains for us as a society
Despite the fact that Eduardo Bejarano recognized that it is an important step to clarify the murder, he said that “it will be their turn to find that convincing explanation. Let them tell us who ordered his homicide within the FARC, how this operation was financed and carried out and what reasons they had for ordering this act.
In addition, he called on the National University to demand the truth of this homicide from the justice system and together “let us be vigilant of the truths that the JEP tells about this case.”
Dolly Montoya, rector of the National University, praised the work of Jesús Bejarano as a teacher at the institution: “His death hurt us a lot, but this forces us to reflect on truth, justice and non-repetition. It is an opportunity for the FARC to also recognize the profound damage done to the institution ”.
Jesús Antonio Bejarano was assassinated on September 15, 1999 inside the facilities of the Nacional. At the time he was a government negotiator in front of the Simón Bolívar Guerrilla Coordinator, which grouped together the guerrillas of the Farc, the Eln, the Epl, the M-19 and the Quintin Lame; who spoke with the then minister Horacio Serpa Uribe in Caracas, Venezuela and Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Although at first it was said that during the assassination harangues in favor of the Farc were heard, the hypothesis at the time pointed to the extreme right, because at that time Jaime Garzón was assassinated.
According to Professor Beethoven Herrera, Bejarano warned on multiple occasions about the improvised way in which the peace process with the FARC was advancing, in San Vicente del Caguán, with former President Andrés Pastrana. His criticisms “were not to the liking of that government and even less for the guerrillas, so much so that they classified him as an enemy. Time proved him right ”, he concluded.
