The former commander of the Farc and current senator Carlos Antonio Lozada recognized before the Truth Commission the responsibility of the guerrillas in the murder of the university professor Jesús Antonio Bejarano.
On October 3, the FARC ex-combatants announced that they would acknowledge responsibility and tell the truth to clarify six homicides. including that of the conservative leader Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, and of the university professor and peace activist Jesús Antonio Bejarano, perpetrated in Bogotá on September 24, 1999.

As part of that commitment, an act was held today at the request of the Truth Commission. Carlos Antonio Lozada and Mauricio Jaramillo attended for the Farc party.
We come to recognize the murder of Professor Bejarano, to hold ourselves responsible for the pain and damage caused. We have no justification or convincing explanation for this fact
“Here, looking at them head-on, we come to acknowledge the murder of Professor Jesús Antonio Bejarano. To take responsibility for the pain and damage caused. We have no justification or convincing explanation for this violation of International Humanitarian Law,” said Lozada.
He added that a guerrilla commando perpetrated the crime “That should never have happened, so today we ask for forgiveness” and that with Bejarano, who was part of the negotiations for a political solution to the conflict, a better peace agreement could have been built.
“What happened hurts us deeply,” Lozada said after noting that as an organization they made these kinds of decisions “in the midst of the maelstrom of war, decisions that can only be the product of the fog of war that blinds the understanding and understanding of reality”.
“We cannot turn back time and avoid this tragedy, but we can assure our commitment and will to the truth system of justice and reparation. To commit ourselves with you and Colombian society to fully employ ourselves in the construction of peace and may it be alive there. the memory, intelligence and love of all for Jesús Antonio Bejarano “Lozada said.
He indicated that the prolongation of the war was filling the parties with hatred and revenge “and we revolutionaries lost our objectivity, the ability to realistically recognize what is ethical and just.” He added “that this is not an attempt to justify or minimize responsibilities.”
Eduardo Bejarano, son of the victim, spoke on the spot after listening to Lozada.
He said that he recognized and valued the presence of the former commanders, admitting that they were wrong and that they hope that these statements “will be validated with evidence before the JEP.” He added that they have been 21 years of impunity and what they expect is the whole truth of what happened.
“Clearly this truth cannot be a half truth, this truth cannot be incomplete. This truth should especially satisfy the victims, ”said Bejarano.
And he told Lozada that in his request for forgiveness he did not give details of what happened.
“What he said calls my attention that they have no convincing explanation for what happened to Jesús Antonio Bejarano. Well, they will have to find it, the truth has to be convincing, it has to be definitive, the truth in my father’s case cannot be left half “, said Bejarano.
He also stated that they expect the JEP to “say who ordered the murder? How was it financed? How was the operation carried out? And beyond that, we want to understand what reasons they had for ordering this murder, because clearly it could not have been the result of a tantrum or something emotional or emotional from a member of the Farc. Some compelling reasons must be behind that ”.
And he concluded that the only tribute they await to his father’s memory is that of truth and justice in the case.
Dolly Montoya, rector of the National University said that the violence that the country has experienced also reached the university and has affected them with the death of teachers and students “As a result of the violent actions on our campus. The actions of the war have been transferred to our alma mater, sometimes in the form of assassinations, threats, accusations.”
He also regretted the stigmatization that is made against educational centers “and that tries to make the true role of the university and its contributions to society and the country invisible.”
