The defense of former President Álvaro Uribe, investigated for bribery of witnesses and procedural fraud, met yesterday with the leadership of the Organization of American States (OAS) to request that the organization accompany this process.
Prior to the meeting, the ex-president’s lawyers sent the OAS a document in which they relate what they consider to be the violations that have occurred to their rights in the middle of the process and the evidence of the same.
It transpired that the defense spoke of 13 specific violations that, in their opinion, affect fundamental rights and due process in the case.
After the meeting, it was learned that the general secretary of the organization, Luis Almagro, appointed a senior official to monitor the process.

“We thank the Secretary General of the OAS for having appointed the OAS Legal Secretary to follow up on the process. and for ordering that the information provided to the IACHR that involves violations of judicial guarantees be sent, “said lawyer Víctor Mosquera, who leads the international defense of Uribe Vélez.
He explained that it was agreed that the body forward a report on the issue to the IACHR so that the case could also be monitored by that body.
On October 14, in a letter to the Secretary General of the OAS, US Congressman Frank Rooney, the highest-ranking Republican on the Subcommittee for the Western Hemisphere in the House of Representatives, had already requested the accompaniment of the OAS.
“Failure to comply with the guarantees of due process, especially in the face of such a politicized investigation, deteriorates the democratic framework and institutions in the hemisphere. And when it is directed against someone like Uribe, who has a legacy of defending democracy against constant attacks, it is especially dangerous when it comes to holding on to the democratic principles that we share and that are at the heart of the OAS Democratic Charter and the values that we share, “said Rooney.
The investigation today is in the office of a delegated prosecutor before the Supreme Court of Justice, after the Investigation Chamber lost the jurisdiction of the process after Uribe’s resignation from his seat in the Senate.
Due to this step in the process from the Court to the Prosecutor’s Office, Uribe’s defense requested his freedom, which was granted by a judge of control of guarantees from Bogotá.
Yesterday, the Prosecutor’s Office accused Diego Cadena, Uribe’s former lawyer, linked to the same facts of alleged bribery of witnesses to change their versions and favor a constitutional expert.
