The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) recovered the red shirt that he wore the first five days of the Vuelta with a triumph of authority that gave him the treble in the tenth stage, disputed between Castro Urdiales and Suances, tied with the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadier).
In a magical ending, Roglic appeared at the moment of truth to raise his arms and put on the red sweater to the surprise of Carapaz, who gave up 3 seconds, which together with the bonus of his rival made him say goodbye to the most desired garment.
A shot of a real battering ram by Roglic, strong and confident before the queen days of the Asturian mountain. His whiplash joined the success in Suances to those achieved in Arrate and Moncalvillo. They won ahead of Austrian Felix Grosschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Italian Andrea Bagioli (Deceuninck-Quick Step).
The Vuelta enter the Farrapona day on fire, with Roglic and Carapaz tied for the lead, but with a moral advantage for the winner of the 2019 Vuelta. Dan Martin held third at 25 seconds, fourth is Hugh Carthy at 51 and fifth and first Spanish , at 1.54 minutes, Enric Mas.
FAST STAGE, BENNETT CAN’T KEEP THE RHYTHM
Very coastal Cantabrian day, with a transition label, without great difficulties but with an uncomfortable ending, with a 2 km steep “biting” up before the last banner. The Castro Urdiales squad left calm, except for 4 runners who made the escape: Lastras (Caja Rural), Van Moer (Lotto-Soudal), Lingthart (Direct Energie) and Molenaar (Burgos-BH).
Good escape for the men of the general classification and for the aspiring to the more than possible sprint, the last option for the sprinters before arriving in Madrid on November 8. When passing through Santoa, the poster shown to the escapees from a motorcycle marked the maximum difference: 12 minutes.
Deceuninck, Mitchelton and Astana stoked the rhythm to stabilize the escape, little by little they were eating ground from the quartet that crossed with 4 minutes in advance at the top of Alto de San Cipriano (3 Cat. With 4.5 km at 4.1% ), the only difficulty of the day, 60 to goal.
Bennett, enraged by the stage that the VAR swept him in Aguilar de Campoo, cried out for revenge, but the port and the rhythm of the stage plunged him into misery and he far forgot to fight the stage.
ROGLIC SABA HOW TO WIN THE STAGE
The uneven pulse between adventurers and a large group imposed its logic at the 16th finish line, shortly after passing Santillana del Mar, when the 157 surviving runners gathered in this 75th edition of the Vuelta. A new stage began, the one that led to the glory of Suances.
Who were the applicants to the stage, a sprinter, a “finisher” taking advantage of the final slope? At 12 from the finish line, Ineos tensed ahead with Froome to take Carapaz to a safe area and control access to the final slope, conducive to last-minute surprises.
The men of the general were marked closely, attentive to the cuts. The high pace knocked out Ackermann and other fast men. Race launched by the triumph button, which the French champion Remy Cavagna took advantage of to attack, but without success.
On the slope towards the finish line, Carapaz wore the red shirt among the first, enduring an attack from the restless men of Caja Rural, and from Omar Fraile, placing Alex Aranburu, finally fourth.
I also bought tickets for the Bora for Grosschartner. The situation seemed doomed to a draw between the favorites, but Roglic appeared on the one hand, as if by magic, smarter than anyone, to finish the goal at the right time and place. Triple for the champion of Liege. Now, Asturias. Keep the party going.
The Return to Spain continue this Saturday with the dispute of its eleventh stage, of 170 kilometers starting in the Asturian town of Villaviciosa and the top of La Farrapona, of the first category.
