The Colombian-Spanish tourist activist and businesswoman Juana Perea was murdered in Nuquí, Chocó, by still unidentified people, as confirmed by the municipality’s Mayor’s Office.

Perea was a community leader in the area and ran an ecotourism hotel in Termales, Nuqui village. “With great nostalgia today we learned about his murder. This leaves a very bad message for the area and for security here in Chocó “said Luis Perea, president of the Institutional and Community Group for Artisanal Fishing (GICPA).

The lifeless body of the leader was found in front of the municipality’s police station, on the beach. “One is dismayed because the security situation is very complex. Last week they also assassinated Mr. Fernando Vega, the wave of violence has been growing in recent days “added Luis Perea.

As an emissary from the mayor’s office told Semana Rural, high-ranking officials of the Navy and the National Police are in a security council on the case with Mayor Yefer Arley Gamboa to establish the steps to follow in the investigation.

“Juana was like everyone’s mother, she was a light for the community in the area. Where they needed her, there she was, whether it was to raise their voices against the port of Tribugá, to support the Chocó Surf League or whatever. He had his hand extended to help everyone who needed it “says Kathy Sutton, president of the Chocó Surf League, who recognized that Juana represented all the good that there was in that region.

The mayor stated that the security situation in the municipality is very complex. There is a weak presence of the state and until recently in Nuquí there were only 9 policemen for a community of more than 6,000 inhabitants. There is also a strong presence of illegal armed groups, who in the area find a strategic point for drug trafficking.

“I spoke continuously with her because of the role she played; she had not told me that she had threats. She told me about her concern about some pamphlets (which were circulated recently in various municipalities of the country but no threat in particular”Gamboa told EFE.

Semana Rural tried to contact several leaders in the area, but given the magnitude of the events they preferred not to comment on the matter.
