The senator for the Polo Iván Cepeda assured this Wednesday that the Colombian ambassador to the United States, Francisco Santos, offered “help” to the campaign of the president of that country, Donald Trump, and that he has had “meetings” with that electoral company .

Cepeda develops a debate on political control over the Colombian Chancellor, Claudia Blum, in which she investigates some movements of Ambassador Santos and congressmen from the Democratic Center, particularly in the state of Florida.

The opponent recalled the mention of former President Juan Manuel Santos, on September 9, about the possibility that some officials of the National Government were related to the US presidential campaign.

“A source of full and total credibility informs me that the government spokesperson referred to by former President Santos would be Ambassador Francisco Santos, who, according to this information, would have offered support to President Donald Trump’s campaign,” Cepeda assured.

The congressman for the Polo added that “the priority orientation of the policy of our embassy” in the United States has been to sponsor “that in the electoral speech of President Trump’s campaign the aggressive accusation of the candidate and former vice president Joe Biden of belonging to the called Castrochavism ”.

For Cepeda, in this way he is “ensuring that he (Biden) and the Democrats would create an American version of the Latin American socialist regimes, all in order to win over a Colombian sector of the electorate in the state of Florida.”

“The insistence of this type of speech by Uribismo has caused President Trump’s campaign to disqualify former Vice President Biden for being Castro-Chavista,” Cepeda said.

Meetings

The opposition congressman spoke of two meetings of “activists” of Uribismo, last August, who would seek to provide support to the Trump campaign.

One of them had been between “Uribe activists in Miami and people from the Trump administration in which the peace process was attacked and the Trump campaign and the advisers of the United States President were proposed to include attacks on the process. of peace as a campaign issue ”.

“The following day, August 17 of this year, that delegation, which also included the director of the Inter-American Development Bank, Mr. Claver-Carone, and the best friend of Mrs. Ivanka Trump’s husband, Adam Boehler , director of the International Development Finance Corporation, met in Bogotá with President Duque to discuss the Colombia Crece program, ”he stated.

And he added that “the ambassador has met with people from the Trump President campaign in public and in private in Florida, through virtual channels, and this seems to me to be a fact that he does not admit any debt.”

The Ambassador’s Response

Ambassador Santos responded to Cepeda’s remarks and said that he has only participated in two meetings attended by Colombians in the state of Florida, both organized by Fabio Andrade, an American Colombian who has been active for Republicans and is part of of the Latinos for Trump campaign.

The first, according to the ambassador, was in March and the topic was the US census and the need for Colombians to participate in order to be counted in the US.

And the second in July and it was on relations between Colombia and the United States. At that meeting, Santos insisted that the relationship with the United States must be bipartisan.

“Colombia has had a very good relationship with presidents of both parties. And it has to be that way. Plan Colombia started with Clinton and Pastrana, continued with Bush and Uribe, then with Obama and Santos and now with Trump and Duque. The relationship is so important that it transcends that division in the United States. And Colombia has to be very careful and we have been in keeping that job, which is suprapartisan, and that is why I work every day in Congress with Democrats and Republicans and with the president. on duty, “said the ambassador at the July event.

According to the diplomat, he did not attend or organize a third event mentioned by Cepeda that was held in August with Colombians in Florida and Trump’s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien.

Prior to the Chancellor’s response, the senators for the Democratic Center Ernesto Macías and Paola Holguín referred to Cepeda’s allegations and said that the debate, in reality, was against the Uribistas, not against the National Government.

They explained several of the events described by the opposition congressman and claimed the right of their party to combat the so-called Castro-Chavism referred to by the Senator del Polo.
