On average 650 people are victims of theft per day in Colombia:

According to the latest balance sheet from the Prosecutor’s Office on thefts in the country, between January and August 2020, 159,122 people have been victims of theft, which means that a day they rob 650 citizens on average, that is, approximately 27 robberies they happen every hour in Colombia.

Despite the fact that this year crime statistics have decreased by almost 60% compared to 2019, the figures do not cease to attract attention, considering that crime occurred in times of pandemic. According to the balance of the Prosecutor’s Office, the most recurrent forms of theft are: the theft of people with 69,399 victims in the first eight months of the year; cell phone theft with 32,978 victims and home theft with 17,097 victims.

In Bogotá, the towns most affected by mobile device theft are: Suba, Engativá and Kennedy.

However, the numbers of thefts that remain in impunity are quite alarming. In 2019, of the 463,431 processes that the Prosecutor’s Office opened for the crime, only 11,182 led to the execution of sentences. 12,929 went to trial and 133 more finished early. In other words, only 2.4% of the cases concluded or reached the trial stage..

A year later the picture is very similar, although the figures are lower due to time. Of 224,796 processes opened by the prosecuting body so far in 2020, only 1,955 reached the execution of sentences, 7,709 They are on trial and 60 were terminated early. That is to say, only 4.3 of the cases ended or are in the last phase.
