(CNN Spanish) – Josep Maria Bartomeu stopped being the president of FC Barcelona. He announced it this Tuesday through a press conference.

The club’s Board of Directors will also accompany Bartomeu on his departure.

“It was a considered, serene, consulted decision, and agreed by all the comrades,” said the president when announcing his resignation.

Bartomeu became president of Barça in 2014, as successor to Sandro Rosell, of whom he was vice president for four years.

His departure comes after Barcelona fell on Saturday against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou. But beyond the classic defeat, the club has suffered a series of sporting disappointments.

One of them was the overwhelming 8-2 defeat it suffered in August against Bayern Munich, in the semifinals of the last Champions League.

After that defeat, Bartomeu was about to lose the best player in the club’s history: Lionel Messi. The Argentine expressed to him to the directive culé his intention to leave the club, but soon it ended up remaining to fulfill another year of contract.

During the six years of Bartomeu’s presidency, Barcelona achieved the second treble in its history, made up of the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey 2014-2015. In total there were 13 trophies that Barcelona won during his tenure.
