Until now there were more rumors than evidence. That Mexican gangsters were sending emissaries and even agronomists to Colombia to negotiate coca and to improve and guarantee its purity. That in Córdoba, in Bajo Cauca and in Chocó there were pamphlets of the Sinaloa cartel and that of ‘Los Zeta’ and that foreigners with a Mexican accent were terrorizing the population. That the index of Mexicans captured in the country was skyrocketing.
Still no one dares to say, with certainty, that the men of the bloodthirsty Mexican cartels are carrying out crimes in Colombia. But evidence has already begun to appear that at least three Mexican cartels are moving the war in the country.

An investigation on the ground by the Ombudsman’s Office, which began three years ago, ensures that the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels transferred their rivalry to at least 5 departments. And what happened this weekend in Putumayo would confirm that fear.

An armed group identified as ‘Sinaloa’ reached Puerto Leguízamo and murdered two people. And although there is an organization in Chocó that uses this ‘cartel’ to instill fear, there are solid indications that Mexicans have already begun to kill people in Colombia on their own.
Initially, after the extradition of the heads of the Self-Defense Forces (2008), Mexican drug lords agreed to distribute some areas of drug crops and drug routes, to guarantee an increase in production that could meet the demand in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Given the Putumayo situation, and reports of the subjugation of peasants by the illegal group “La Mafia”, insisting on the content warned by Early Alerts 024-2018 and 018-2020 on the dispute over territory by illegal armed groups linked to drug trafficking,

The two sides
After the peace agreement with the FARC they concentrated on obtaining control of the zones, with blood and fire. According to the report, Sinaloa allied with the so-called Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC), in the northwestern part of the country.
They began by capturing narcorrentas and leading the distribution of coca. But now “they are supporting the armed confrontation between the AGC and the Virgilio Peralta Bloc (known as ‘Caparros’ or ‘Caparrapos’),” says the Ombudsman’s Office.
(Also: Where do the weapons with which they are murdering in Colombia come from?)
The latter are receiving an injection of resources from the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel to confront the Sinaloa side.
This dispute is evidenced in the violence that is taking place in Valdivia, Bello, Medellín, Caucasia, Tarazá, Cáceres, El Bagre, Zaragoza and Nechí, in Antioquia. In addition, in the convulsed public order in Tierralta, Montelíbano, Puerto Libertador and San José de Uré (Córdoba), which the Ombudsman has left reflected in early warnings that it has sent to the Government and local authorities.
Death in the south
But in the south of the country the picture is different: they went from financially feeding the war to acting. The Ombudsman’s Office notes that, in 2019 and 2020, the presumed direct presence of members of the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartel was identified.
“Their actions have been reflected in community versions about the arrival of people who are presumed to come from Central America, as well as in the distribution of pamphlets and the commission of homicides, in areas of high strategic value for the production, distribution and commercialization of drugs” , the report reads.

And he adds that although a single Mexican armed group has not yet been identified, acts of violence are attributed to them by their own hand.
In Cauca, meanwhile, they are told of sowing terror through pamphlets. And that in Buenos Aires; Jamundí, Valle; Corinto and Caloto have sealed agreements with dissident factions of the ex-FARC. There also perform ‘Los Zetas’.
And above the Pacific coast, Sinaloa has taken sides in the dispute over coca between the Eln and the ex-FARC, leaning towards the latter to those it nurtures with weapons.
Prosecutor says they are in 10 departments
His trace was also found in Catatumbo. There it is estimated that 80 percent of the drug crops are already under the control of Mexicans, who control them from open offices in Cartagena.

In January 2018, EL TIEMPO revealed an investigation in which the Prosecutor’s Office itself indicated that the Mexican mafia was in 10 departments of Colombia.
“The Mexican cartels have already started acquiring coca plantations in Colombia. We have captured agronomists and engineers from that country who are improving the productivity of the plant in laboratories and the number of citizens of that nationality who participate in criminal acts is increasing: there are more than a hundred “, said the prosecutor at that time General Néstor Humberto Martínez.
Martínez noticed what the Ombudsman’s Office now indicates on the ground.
“There are 102 investigations that link 103 Mexican citizens (…) One of the cases, which shows the magnitude of the problem, took place on December 2, 2016 in Sibaté (Cundinamarca), where the capture of five Mexicans was carried out and the seizure of 2 tons of coca camouflaged in mooring buoys for cargo ships, ”prosecutor Martínez wrote to the high government in early 2017.What are the local authorities doing with these alerts from the Defensoría?
