The ambassador of Spain in Venezuela, Jesús Silva, assured this Monday that the diplomatic mission under his charge has always been respectful of international standards and has acted with neutrality in the South American country, after the dictatorship accused him of violating the Convention of Vienna
“We have always been respectful of the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and, in that sense, the Embassy has been neutral and respectful of that principle,” he said.
These statements occur two days after the opposition Leopoldo López left the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, where he stayed for almost 18 months as a guest, while he was requested by the Venezuelan Justice and accused of being a “terrorist” by Nicolás Maduro.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday in which it denounced “the flagrant breach of the fundamental provisions of the Vienna Convention”, which governs diplomatic relations, by Spain.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources in Spain have recalled that the note from Venezuela was issued hours after The Government of Spain issued a statement condemning the arrests of personnel from the Spanish Embassy in Caracas and the searches carried out in houses of assigned workers during the same on Saturday night, on understanding that these facts do violate the Vienna Convention.
A guard at the diplomatic headquarters, identified as José Jerjes Neira who had been working with the Spanish mission for several years, was detained by the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), the same State security body that searched the building where the employees reside .
Venezuela onslaught
The one considered the number two of Chavismo and vice president of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, joined the criticism of Silva about López’s departure.
“He did not flee from the Embassy of Spain, guests do not flee, I guarantee that, being a guest, the ambassador of Spain accompanied him to the door or the car that took him away,” said Cabello without arguing his statement.
However, Maduro has not spoken directly on the case, despite the fact that this Sunday he participated for about two hours in a televised event in which he announced several changes in his cabinet.
