After the strong impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the pocketbook and on the income of thousands of households and that according to entities such as Fedesarrollo could bring monetary poverty to levels of 49 percent at the end of the year, the country’s labor unions are getting ready to reach the negotiation of minimum salary with an aspiration greater than that of all the years.

According to Diógenes Orjuela, president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), There will be no reactivation if money is not put into the pockets of Colombians to stimulate consumption and public spending, to move the dynamics of domestic production.

“The increase must be much higher than in previous years so the government must assume a part. If this criterion is not taken, it will be very difficult for the dire economic situation to be overcome, ”said the union leader.

In this sense, Orjuela indicated that although the figures for negotiating with businessmen have not yet been defined, taking into account that in normal times they arrive at the table with levels between 10 and 12 percent, this time they could arrive with requests up to above 15 percent.

This means that the workers’ centrals could reach the Roundtable for the Agreement on Salary and Labor Policies with a proposal higher than by more than seven times current inflation, which according to the Dane was 1.97 percent for the last year ended in September 2020.

Orjuela told EL TIEMPO that “it is irrational to try to reactivate the economy with reforms that reduce workers’ income.”

In any case, an increase greater than this year, at levels of 8 percent, would raise the minimum income of a worker by 70,224 pesos, that is, 20,537 pesos more than the increase received in 2020, which was 49,687 pesos.

What is still very distant is that the minimum wage reaches one million pesos, For this would require a readjustment of 13.9 percent, a level that is precisely within the range of what the CUT considers the increase for 2021 to be.

In any case, the atmosphere for the agreement this year begins with a heavy atmosphere for several months, due to the fact that the labor unions withdrew from the discussions that are being carried out in the Employment Mission, at the request of the Agreement Commission.

This is due to their disagreement with the decree that regulated the minimum social protection floor, with which employers must assume a greater contribution to social security for workers who earn less than the minimum wage and are hired part-time or who work for provision of services.
