Without legal recognition to form a new political movement, but with his seat in Congress, Senator Jorge Enrique Robledo made his separation from the Democratic Pole official this weekend.
The decision took place in a virtual assembly in which 417 delegates out of 422 present approved the split of the party, which was carried out in a consensual manner and after several months of analysis and conversations.
One of the main reasons for this step was the differences in positions between Robledo and Polo, especially in relation to the last presidential campaigns.
The figure of the split of parties or separation of a sector is not very frequent in Colombia. Although it is contemplated in the law, there is no development that allows those who leave to know in what conditions they can do so.

In this case, the separation of Robledo del Polo took place under conditions that were decided “By common agreement” and with the consent of a resolution approved by the directives of the community “Unanimously”, according to the president of the party, Álvaro Argote.
One of the core issues of this step was the party’s legal status or recognition. This allows receiving state funding and endorsing candidates for elections and, according to the regulations, is obtained upon arrival in Congress.
The split sector will seek, before the National Electoral Council, that they recognize political rights for the split, since that part has not been regulated by law
In this sense, Argote affirmed that it was “express and clear that the split sector will not affect the Democratic Pole at all, not even from a civil, electoral or administrative point of view.”

“The split sector will seek, before the National Electoral Council, that they recognize political rights for the split, since that part has not been regulated by law,” affirmed the president of the Polo, confirming that the legal status was at the head of the Polo.
Instead, ownership of Robledo’s seat in the Senate is something the party will respect. “The seats are personal, although they are drawn on behalf of the parties,” he said.
This means that the left-wing congressman will be able to continue in office until July 20, 2022; but if he wants to return to the Legislative, he will have to look for other ways, since, with the decision of the weekend, he will not be able to receive the Polo’s endorsement for that election.
Robledo’s departure from his party was a decision that, for several observers, had been seen coming for some time and what remains to be seen is the direction he will take with a view to 2022.
