Since Apple was launched it has been presented as an exclusive and innovative brand; and the iPhone, one of its most popular products, has managed to retain a large number of consumers around the world who migrate from one model to another, but how much would they be willing to pay for a new version?

This year, in full technological boom, Steve Jobs’ company announced the launch of a new line with several models: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, whose prices range between $ 3.9 million and $ 7.4 million.

This means that to buy the cheapest model, the iPhone 12 Mini 64 GB, a person who earns a minimum wage in Colombia, currently $ 877,803, would have to work about 136.7 days or, what is the same, invest a few 4.6 salaries.

The prices of this new line change between one model and another due to several factors such as storage, for example, the 128GB iPhone 12 Mini could cost up to $ 4.2 million, according to the launch prices of the Linio platform.

Next on the list would be the 256GB iPhone 12 Mini, which would cost $ 4.7 million, that is, about 163 days of work invested to buy this new model.

The iPhone 12, which like the others would have an A14 bionic chip, with which Apple guarantees speed and a longer battery life, could cost $ 4.4 million with a storage of 64 GB.

The 128GB and 256GB model would cost $ 4.7 million and $ 5.2 million, that is, 5.1 and almost six Colombian minimum wages; the same value that a TV larger than 56 inches or a refrigerator could cost.

“IPhone is a very aspirational brand and underpinned by a great name and a loyal fan base; however, its price, performance and characteristics do not make it stand out well against its direct competitors, ”said James Guapacho of Guapacho.com.

The Pro and Pro Max models are the highest priced: the 128GB iPhone Pro could cost $ 5.5 million and the 256GB $ 6 million, that is, almost 6.3 and 6.8 minimum wages (see graph).

The 512GB iPhone Pro would have a value of $ 6.9 million, to buy it, a person who earns a minimum would have to work 239.2 days. Likewise, to buy the 128GB and 256GB iPhone Pro Max, 205.3 and 222.2 days of work would be needed respectively, since their value would be $ 6 million and $ 6.5 million.

For the most expensive model, the 512 GB iPhone 12 Pro Max, you would have to invest 8.5 minimum wages and work more than 256.1 days dedicated solely to its purchase.

“High-end phones, such as the new iPhone 12, are aimed at users not only with greater purchasing power, but who need high processing capacities, greater speed and other benefits in productivity, communication and photography, among others,” said Mauricio Jaramillo Marín , director of Impactotic.co.

Among the advantages that Apple highlights in its iPhone 12 line is the connection to 5G, which would be available in Colombia until 2022; fast download speeds, OLED display, high resolution cameras and night mode, all in a lightweight design.

Jaramillo commented that users should evaluate their possibilities and needs when buying, as there are cheaper phones, up to $ 1.5 million, that can meet them. However, he explained that an important point to consider is the useful life of the equipment.

“While a $ 500,000 phone in a year will already be an old computer, that becomes slow, or something may have been damaged, an iPhone 12 can almost guarantee five years with the current operating system and with perfect operation”, Jaramillo commented.

5G speed has not yet reached Colombia but it is already being talked about
One of the main benefits that iPhone promises with its new models is the possibility of connecting to 5G. This technology has not yet reached the country, but the first pilots are already underway, which could be implemented between 2022 and 2024.

For now, the ICT Ministry has granted permits to Claro, Telefónica, ETB, Xiro Investment Group and Itics to begin tests, analyze business opportunities and point out the benefits that the implementation of this technology could bring to the country.
