According to the Dane, for a person to be considered poor in the capital must receive a per capita income of 448,749 pesos, an amount greater than that received by someone in the same condition in rural areas.
The statistical entity concludes, for example, that two people who live in the countryside and in rural areas earn less than one in Bogotá.
The Dane report describes the following amounts for a person to be considered poor in Colombia, depending on the area in which they live:
- Headers: 361,574 pesos.
- Dispersed rural and populated centers: 210,969 pesos.
- 13 cities: 400,698 pesos.
- Bogota: 448,749 pesos.
- Riohacha: 278,796 pesos.
- National total: 327,674 pesos.
The report also highlights that last year monetary poverty was 35.7% and extreme monetary poverty was 9.6% of the national total, according to Dane. In 2019 the Gini coefficient in the national total was 0.526 and in 2018 it was 0.517.
“This means an increase in household income inequality,” says the statistical entity.
Another worrying data shows that between 2018 and 2019, 662,000 people in Colombia entered poverty and 729,000 people they entered extreme monetary poverty.
“In 2019, in the national total, 17,470,000 people were in a situation of monetary poverty; and in 2018 there were 16,808,000 people in this situation. This means that 662,000 people entered monetary poverty ”, details the Dane.
Colombia’s poorest cities
The city with the highest incidence of monetary poverty in 2019 was Quibdó with 60.9%, followed by Riohacha with 49.3%. In contrast, the city with the lowest percentage of monetary poverty in 2019 was Manizales with 20.6%, followed by Cali with 21.9%.
In what has to do with extreme poverty, the city with the highest number of people in this condition in 2019 was also Quibdó with 23.8%, followed by Riohacha with 19.5%.
