More than 225,000 Peruvians have signed in just 12 hours a public petition on the internet against Chilean referee Julio Bascuñán, who on Tuesday led the match between the Peruvian and Brazilian teams, won by Canarinha 2-4 with a very controversial referee performance .
The petition launched on the change.org platform requests that Bascuñán’s referee license be withdrawn, who charged two highly debatable penalties in favor of the Brazilian team without apparently reviewing the VAR.
The initiative was published at the end of the meeting and in just three hours it had already obtained 180,000 supporters, while earlier this Wednesday it had already added another 45,000 subscriptions.
The author of the petition recalled that Bascuñán was already the protagonist of other controversial sounds at the international level, such as last year in a Copa Libertadores match between Cerro Porteño and River Plate, where the Argentines protested that he did not expel Paraguayan striker Nelson Valdez after a tough entry.
The petition was also disseminated on social networks by influential personalities with hundreds of thousands of followers such as the political scientist and former head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Fernando Tuesta, also a football fan and a confessed follower of Alianza Lima.
“Until 80 minutes the match was tied, but Bascuñán scandalously inclined in favor of Brazil. A robbery of a thief dressed in black,” wrote Tuesta.
The Peruvians felt especially harmed by the Chilean judge, especially when they saw themselves up to two times in advantage in the match thanks to the goals of André Carrillo and Renato Tapia, which made Peru dream of winning for the first time in its history. Brazil is a World Cup qualifying.
Other Peruvian journalists have criticized the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) appointing a Chilean referee to lead Peru just in the game prior to meeting the Chilean team.
The Blanquirroja has to visit the National Stadium of Santiago de Chile on the third day of the South American qualifying qualifying rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which will initially be played next month. Both teams reach this date with a point in the first two days of these qualifiers, as Chile lost against Uruguay (2-1) and drew against Colombia (2-2), while Peru equalized against Paraguay (2-2) and fell with much controversy against Brazil (2-4).
