The indigenous Minga that runs from Cauca to Valle del Cauca has started and they have already presented their demands to the national government. One of them is intended to be as soon as they arrive in Cali, which is expected on Monday, October 12, and is to speak personally with President Iván Duque. If that doesn’t happen, the Minga intends to reach Bogotá.

Indigenous communities say they are mobilizing to reject massacres, assassinations of social leaders, criminalization of social protest, for territory, democracy and peace.

“Life has no price, life is not negotiated, the dignity of the people is not negotiated, the territory is not negotiated”said Ferney Quintero, counselor of the Cauca Regional Indigenous Council (Cric).

The leader pointed out that they hope that the President of the Republic Iván Duque will meet with them on October 12 in Cali, to listen to their demands, otherwise they will continue on their way to Bogotá.

The minga also has the participation of other social sectors such as peasant organizations, black communities and student movements.

José Daniel Gallego, student delegate to the Minga Human Rights Commission, points out that they have joined this march for the “deepening social and humanitarian crisis”.

We students are proud of being indigenous, black and peasant, that is why we believe in the value of life

“We students are proud to be indigenous, black and peasant, that is why we believe in the value of life, in which education must be strengthened as a fundamental right and guarantee zero enrollment in 2021 and not a defense ministry for death, “added the human rights defender.

The communities reported that in the last hours, from the concentration site in Caldono, Cauca, there were overflights of aircrafts of the Public Force.

The indigenous people demand that the National Government not carry out acts of provocation and respect the mobilization. In addition, they called for the minga not to be stigmatized “with headlines, photographs, comments, questions and statements formulated in a biased manner in its different media, from official pages to official profiles on social networks.”

“Since in some cases, this only reinforces the stigmatization of social protest and the accusations to the organizational social sectors that have historically mobilized in the department and the region for the vindication of human rights,” said Cric in a statement. .

The minga began this October 10 in Cauca. On October 12 they will arrive in caravans and chivas to Jamundí, Valle del Cauca, and later they will go to Cali, where they will wait between the 13th and 14th, to have a direct dialogue with President Duque.

8,000 thousand indigenous people will arrive in the capital of Valle del Cauca. To these will be added 2,000 that are already in the city.

The promoters affirmed that it is a peaceful protest that does not include the blockade of the Pan-American highway.

‘They should not feel intimidated’

General John Jairo Rojas, commander of the Cauca Specific Command, indicated that security for the minga to run smoothly is guaranteed.

“We have the security of the entire Pan-American Highway, both the main and alternate roads. There are about 26 platoons in critical points, in the company of the National Police, in order to guarantee security, including also for those who are going to march. So far everything has gone completely normal, “said the officer.

In a march we have to guarantee safety around them, so they should not feel intimidated

“We have the security of the entire Pan-American Highway, both the main and alternate roads. There are about 26 platoons in critical points, in the company of the National Police, in order to guarantee security, including also for those who are going to march. So far everything has gone completely normal, ”said the officer.
Given the overflights and military presence around the road, the officer explained that “it is normal.” “In a march we have to guarantee security around them, so they should not feel intimidated. It is a preventive measure for anyone trying to affect the manifestation. In the same way, the soldiers are on the road, to guarantee safety ”, added the general.

One of the points that the officer highlights is the way in which one of the reservations assumed the minga.

“It is worth noting the Canoas reservation, which is one of the largest in Cauca, with about 10,000 registered indigenous people. They marched inside their reservation and its sidewalks and in each one of them more people from the reservation were joining and up, at their main headquarters, they organized a ceremony accompanied by cultural events with about 3,500 indigenous people, showing another facet of the march ”, Highlighted the uniformed man.
