The stifle from the Ciudad Jardín wetland in southern Cali was found dead

The stifle that inhabited the Ciudad Jardín wetland, in southern Cali, died in the last hours. His body was spotted floating in the middle of the vegetation this Sunday and will be removed during the day by the Dagma, who must determine the causes of death with a necropsy.

This was one of the three reptiles that had been identified in the lagoon.

In July 2019, the entity transferred another individual to prevent him from suffering an injury since he used to get out of the water to sunbathe, very close to pedestrian crossings and roads. The largest remained in the wetland because his shy behavior did not expose him.

At that time, the stifle moved “it was sunning itself a meter from the road and people passed very close by, which generates a great risk for both the animal and the people. That is why we made the decision to carry out the operation”, explained the Wildlife Manager.

The specialists in the foster home where she was treated showed an injury and for this reason a rear limb was amputated, before being released in coordination with the Regional Corporation of the Valles del Sinú and the San Jorge River.

The work to remove the body of the animal that died, apparently a female, could take several hours since it is in the middle of the thick aquatic vegetation of the place.

Since the body of water is artificial, the Dagma had suggested the transfer of these animals that are not part of the ecosystem. A study was also carried out that revealed that their permanence in the lagoon was impacting the number of individuals of native species such as small mammals, birds and amphibians.
