The personnel of the DEA and other agencies that have moved 5,967 kilometers to Cape Verde to monitor the extradition process of the Barranquillero Álex Saab
-appointed figurehead of Nicolás Maduro- they have already been notified that they could spend Christmas on that small island.
When everyone expected their case to be settled in 15 days, after the reopening of the courts of that African island country, a new appeal will delay the decision by at least 3 months, completing 6 since its capture, on June 12.

The information was confirmed to EL TIEMPO both by federal sources and by people close to Saab. The latter continue to insist on the illegality of his capture, as he is a special agent of the Bolivarian government of Venezuela, captured in full humanitarian mission.

In fact, after threatening Cape Verde with an international complaint for alleged violation of guarantees, now its defense will take the case to the West African Court of Justice.
Added to this new judicial strategy is the issue of the alleged torture to which Saab has been subjected, who is being prosecuted in the United States for corruption linked to opaque contracts in the construction of subsidized houses for the Chávez and Maduro regimes, in an amount of 300 million dollars.
Leak plan alert
Both the United States and Cape Verde denied such torture. In fact, a search was ordered of his cell and the Cape Verde prosecutor’s office issued a statement in which it said that a personal object with which Saab had inflicted injuries was seized.

The new legal delay in the case led local authorities and the United States to deploy an additional security device to ward off versions that an escape plan could be carried out in the prison where Saab remains.
Even movements were detected in nearby islands and countries that have the authorities on alert about a possible plan to extract prisoners.
His defense, however, denies both the version of the self-mutilation, as well as the escape plans and collaboration with the United States justice.
In this regard, they assured that Saab was not linked to the location of at least 700 million dollars in Liechtenstein.

“The special envoy Álex Saab, assures’ he does not have any bank account linked to his name in Liechtenstein, nor $ 700 million,” said his defense, a week after US sources assured EL TIEMPO that said amount is linked to the business of the so-called Clap boxes, whose strings move Saab.
Despite the torture, having cut my arms more than 26 times and given more than 200 blows all over my body, despite forbidding me the simple right to have a pen (a right that all prisoners have), I never I will sign an extradition based on lies and much less a false statement in which I speak about President Maduro and his family, ”Saab said in communication with EL TIEMPO.

To the African Court
In parallel, Alex Saab’s legal team confirmed that he had filed a new international complaint against the Republic of Cape Verde, “for human rights violations”
“Given the constant violations of human rights that the Venezuelan diplomatic agent, Special Envoy Mr. Alex Saab, has suffered since June 12, the date on which he was arbitrarily detained, thus interrupting his trip on a special mission, he has presented a communication to the Court of Justice of the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to denounce their situation and request that precautionary measures be adopted. It is the first time that Cape Verde has been brought before an international court “, says a statement sent this Tuesday.
The defense asks the ECOWAS to verify the alleged violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, committed by Cape Verde against Saab, which, in its opinion, has seen its fundamental rights violated.
Among others, they insist that their personal freedom and security have not been respected; the right to a fair trial, the prohibition of torture, the right to non-discrimination and equality before the law.

“The legal team of the Special Envoy exposes and clarifies that in the context of the political persecution directed by the United States against his client, which is part of the diplomatic aggression against Venezuela, the Republic of Cape Verde is taking a course of action with a procedure of extradition devoid of the most minimal procedural guarantees, “says the statement.
