Why were there explosions at the Military School in Bogotá?

“I live about two blocks from the Military School and what is heard as from 5:15 in the morning They are like a mixture between explosions, detonations, at times shots. They are different sounds. And they are like gusts at times. But you don’t clearly identify what it is because they are different sounds, “a neighbor told Caracol Radio.

Such perception gives an idea of what those who live near the complex where Colombian Army officers are trained could imagine, located on Calle 80 with Carrea 50, in the north of Bogotá.

The answer to what happened was established by the same station, whose reporter was told by the José María Córdova Military School guard that it was about the celebration of the Day of the Military Engineers.

However, the neighbors were not warned and, surely, they must have brought to his memory the terrible night of February 21, 2001, when four gas cylinders loaded with explosives exploded near the military installation. And the balance of that incident affected civilians: 20 injured, three of them seriously, all residents of the area.

Maybe the neighbors do their math and find at least two miscalculations by military engineers. First, because his day is commemorated on October 4 of each year, which is the date on which Francisco José de Caldas was born, hero of the independence of Colombia, who created the School of Military Engineers in 1814, in Rionegro (Antioquia).

So the Military Engineers, in an act of gratitude and recognition to the also known as the ‘Sabio Caldas’, they chose October 4 as the date to commemorate their day. But the celebration took place on Tuesday, October 6, two days later.

Second, lhe School of Military Engineers is located on Avenida Carrera 50 and Calle 18, in the Puente Aranda sector, west center of the capital. Therefore, the residents of Calle 80, after finding out what happened, wonder why they went to celebrate at the José María Córdova Military School.
