Farc recognize the murder of Álvaro Gómez and classify it as an error – Peace Process – Politics

Through a statement, the Farc Party publicly acknowledged what it had already expressed in a letter to the JEP: its responsibility in the assassination of the conservative leader Álvaro Gómez.

“Today, a few days after the 25th anniversary of this assassination, the members of the Secretariat of the extinct Farc-EP recognize before the family of Gómez Hurtado, the country and the world that we are responsible for this fact,” says the document signed by Timochenko, Joaquín Reyes, Carlos Antonio Lozada, Pablo Catatumbo and other former guerrilla leaders.

The FARC assure that Álvaro Gómez was killed because they considered him “a military objective and a class enemy that represented those who had declared war. They also say that “it was a mistake to have assassinated a politician of the stature of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado,” whom he says would have made “a fundamental contribution” to peace.
