According to the report “Vital Statistics, Births and Deaths”, released by DANE, the highest number of deaths in the first seven months of this year corresponds to heart disease or heart attacks.

Second is COVID-19, which this year has claimed more lives than homicides, cerebrovascular diseases and respiratory diseases.

The statistical agency confirmed that during the coronavirus pandemic an excess of mortality has been registered, that is, death rates in the country have already exceeded historical average levels.

The director of DANE, Juan Daniel Oviedo explained that “Here, what is confirmed is that we had a phenomenon of excess mortality that was mitigated for the particular case of Colombia by the great effect that the collateral measures of the pandemic had, specifically confinement and mobility restrictions.”.

The report reveals that between January and July 2020 for every 100 men who died, 12 lost their lives to the coronavirus.
