(CNN Spanish) – LThe Attorney General of Ecuador reported on Saturday that a judge issued preventive detention for Jacobo Bucaram Pulley, son of the country’s former president, Abdalá Bucaram, for his alleged participation in the crime of organized crime.
Jacobo Bucaram Pulley, son of the former president of Ecuador Abdalá Bucaram, was expelled from Colombian territory, as confirmed in a statement on Friday Migration from Colombia that, in addition, it indicated that Bucaram Pulley “had entered the country illegally” since the middle of this year.
The former president’s son was arrested this Friday in Medellín, Antioquia Department, and placed at the disposal of Migración Colombia to coordinate his transfer to Ecuador.
Jacobo Bucaram is being investigated in his country for the crime of illicit association for allegedly having participated in an irregular structure that offered overpriced medicines and supplies to the Social Security hospitals in Guayaquil, a claim that has been rejected by the ex-president’s son.
Through its official account, the Ministry of Government of Ecuador reported that it was notified of the arrest of Jacobo Bucaram, who for 10 years will not be able to enter Colombian territory.
The Ecuadorian Attorney General’s Office announced that the arrest of Jacobo Bucaram was achieved through the exchange of information between the Colombian Attorney General’s Office, the Ecuadorian Attorney General’s Office, and United States agencies. The transfer of Bucaram Pulley to Ecuador will be to comply with the preventive detention provided in the case for which he is being investigated, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
The director of Migration of Colombia, Juan Francisco Espinosa, pointed out that after verifications it was determined that the son of the former president was illegally in Colombia. “Today was the object of expulsion to Ecuador and today it will be handed over to the respective authorities,” added Espinosa.
Former President Abdalá Bucaram wrote on his Twitter account that his son Jacobo “is innocent” and that “everything is orchestrated” to persecute him.
CNN contacted Alfredo Arboleda, Jacobo Bucaram’s lawyer, on Saturday, who said that the situation of his client responds to political issues and a persecution against the Bucaram family. Arboleda insisted that the allegations “have no legal backing” and that the expulsion of Jacobo Bucaram was due to “pressure from the Ecuadorian government to Colombia.
Arboleda lawyer did not respond to CNN if Jacobo Bucaram left through a regular border to Colombia and what activities he was doing in the country. He emphasized that all the information will be delivered in the process.
Former President Bucaram, who ruled Ecuador for six months, from August 1996 to February 1997, is also being investigated for the sale of medical supplies with a surcharge along with two of his other sons and one of his daughters-in-law on whom an order of preventive detention that has not been carried out so far.
