Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today that Azerbaijan has “once again declared war” on all Armenians and called on the international community to prevent an escalation of hostilities in the region.
“This morning Azerbaijan again committed large-scale provocations. There are fatalities and injuries, also among the civilian population. By using heavy weapons, the enemy attacks the positions of the Army of Artsakh (Armenian name of Nagorno Karabakh) in all directions, “Pashinyan said in a televised message to the nation.

In his speech of just over seven minutes, he stated that the “authoritarian Aliev regime has once again declared war on the Armenians.”
“We’re ready for this war because we have realized that the hatred spread against Armenians in Azerbaijan it could not lead to any other result than war, “he said.
He explained that martial law and general mobilization have been decreed because Azerbaijan can “begin military actions in the direction of the Armenian border and resort to provocations to destabilize the situation in the region.”
In this regard, he urged “the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) -for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict- and the entire international community to take the situation seriously“.

“We are on the brink of a full-scale war in the South Caucasus, which may have unpredictable consequences. The war may go beyond the borders of the region and spread,” he warned.
The president also asked the international community to use its influence and do not let Turkey, which supports Azerbaijan, “interfere in the conflict” of Nagorno Karabaj.
Meanwhile, Pahinián’s wife, Anna Hakobián, has moved to the capital of the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno Karabakh, Stepanakert. “I came to be with our sisters and brothers,” she said in a message on her Facebook social network account.
Azerbaijan announced today a “counteroffensive” across the line of contact in the conflict zone, in response to the attacks it said it experienced early Sunday by the Armenian Armed Forces against its positions and civilians.
Yerevan, in turn, has responded to the Azerbaijani attacks and denounced military actions against populated villages in Karabakh.
Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict
The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict dates back to the times of the Soviet UnionWhen, in the late 1980s, the Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno Karabakh, populated mainly by Armenians, asked to join neighboring Armenia, after which a war broke out that caused some 25,000 deaths.
At the end of the fighting, the Armenian forces took control of the Karabakh and occupied vast Azerbaijani territories, which they call a “security strip”, to unite it with Armenia.
Azerbaijan maintains that the solution to the conflict with Armenia necessarily involves the liberation of the occupied territories, demand backed by several resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Armenia, for its part, supports the right to self-determination of Nagorno Karabakh and advocates the participation of representatives of the separatist territory in the negotiations on the settlement of the conflict.
