“The best tribute to the memory of Juan Camilo Sierra Restrepo is to continue forward, and with greater zeal in this effort to enhance (…) reading activity, the enjoyment of books and the strengthening of all the links of the production chain “, said this Sunday Édgar Varela, rector of the Universidad del Valle.

The academic spoke on behalf of the university community after the death of the cultural manager who created and directed the Cali Book Fair.

He sent a message of solidarity to the family, friends and relatives of Sierra Restrepo who died this Saturday in Bogotá, where he had been hospitalized for several weeks to receive treatment against the cancer he suffered.

Varela pointed out that this “is a significant loss for Colombian culture and in particular for the publishing sector and reading activity in the country.” She added that “it is recognized by the various sectors of culture, the great work and leadership that it exercised for years.”

He affirmed that “the Universidad del Valle will continue making the necessary efforts so that the Cali International Book Fair, which this year reaches its fifth version, continues to consolidate itself as one of the most important cultural events in southwestern Colombia and the country.”

Juan Camilo Sierra Restrepo created the festival, in collaboration with the Universidad del Valle, the Spiwak Foundation and the Mayor’s Office of Cali, in 2016. Since then he has worked to position it from the direction. He would be in charge of the virtual edition that will take place between October 15 and 25.

Before that, he served as director of the Fondo de Cultura Económica.
