The authorities are on alert after a version was known that two snipers had arrived in Colombia to attack President Iván Duque and his family.
A senior government official confirmed this Saturday to EL TIEMPO that there is information on a possible criminal plan to attack the first president.
“A human source, of high credibility for us, approached and delivered the information about the attack, which, according to that person, must be done ‘quickly and even with haste‘”The official explained.

He added, consulted by this newspaper, that in light of this information, the first measure adopted was “to unite the intelligence corps of the Forces to work together on one objective: to locate two foreigners who would be in the country to perpetrate the attack against the President and his family ”, he assured.
As it became known from the preliminary information, It would be two men, a Russian and an Israeli, former special forces and expert snipers.
“We are specifying and evaluating all this information, but preventive measures are also taken,” said the source.

He also said: “We cannot deny that we are on high alert and, for obvious reasons, changes in the security schemes of the President and his family are being evaluated. In addition to changes of agenda and public events ”.
The source also explained that the informant told them that the foreigners “are experts in the handling of long-range weapons and that they recently entered the country.”
The official also pointed out that by making this information public, they seek “Warn the criminals that we know they are here and that we are going to locate them.”
Finally, on what is known of who may have ordered the attack, he expressed that it is something that is being evaluated. “In that case we will keep measure,” he concluded.

As has been learned, the unification of intelligence bodies will be in charge of the National Intelligence Directorate (DNI), which depends directly on the Presidency.
From there, a person will be in charge of coordinating and evaluating the information provided by Police and Army Intelligence, as well as other forces that may be collaborating with the issue.
On the other hand, the authorities verify where the foreigners would have entered the country. It is presumed that they entered irregularly by land or by trails.

In addition, the first information indicates that the men would not have entered Colombia with the weapons they would use, but that the weapons would be delivered to them in the country by whoever hired them, although all this is part of the investigation.
This is not the first time that an alleged criminal plan to attack the head of state has been known.
On April 8, 2019, the Prosecutor’s Office, which at that time was headed by Néstor Humberto Martínez, warned that organized armed groups had infiltrated the indigenous minga of Cauca, which lasted 27 days, and that from there they wanted to carry out an attack against the president Iván Duque, who had a scheduled visit to the area the next day.

“Some organized armed groups that have infiltrated this social and indigenous movement would like to carry out a terrorist act that could affect the security of the President of the Republic himself,” Martinez said at the time in a statement delivered from the Casa de Nariño.
The former attorney general added that the investigating body had “Testimonies from reliable sources for the Prosecutor’s Office” and electronic evidence that were part of a criminal process.
The head of the accusing body also detailed that there was information that the terrorist act would be carried out with high precision weapons. In later days, Martínez added that they had photos of machine guns and point 50 rifles, but that there was also knowledge of the possible use of explosives.
