A group of 20 soldiers from the Battalion of Humanitarian Demining Engineers Number Six was subdued by members of the FARC dissidents, identified as the Adán Izquierdo structure.
The incident occurred on September 17 in the rural area of Tuluá, Valle del Cauca, where the uniformed officers handed over an area free of suspicion of antipersonnel mines.
Colonel Hoovers Rio Román, commander of the Humanitarian Demining Brigade, stated that the 20 soldiers were “approached by subjects who, wearing garments for the exclusive use of the Military Forces, identified themselves as members of the Adán Izquierdo Structure of the residual Organized Armed Group ”
Likewise, the officer indicated that “the criminals, in addition to threatening to take our lives, incinerated the vehicle in which the deminers travel to carry out their work and stole another one from them,” said the Colonel.
For its part, the Army’s First Brigade of Humanitarian Demining Engineers stated that: “the bandits stripped the deminers of communication equipment such as radios, cell phones, computers and metal detectors, essential for carrying out humanitarian demining activities.”
Likewise, the Army clarified that the soldiers dedicated to this humanitarian work do not use weapons and were defenseless.
