When intervening in a virtual way at the Concordia Summit, President Iván Duque referred this Wednesday to the risks he sees for the upcoming elections in some countries of the region and for Colombia in 2022.

The president said that the challenge “in front of us” is very complex not only for Colombia but also for Latin America because “there will be a very difficult debate next year”, in which we will see “demagoguery and populism” trying to take advantage of the economic recovery in which the current governments advance.

He also anticipated that they will try to exacerbate all these negative social feelings “and try to build their access to power basing their capacity on generating hatred and resentment among citizens.”

When referring to the presidential elections that will take place in some countries of the region next year and in 2022 in Colombia, Duque said he believes “that the priority today is that we must protect democracy.”.

He assured that it is necessary that we have sensible, precise information and access to data “so that democracy and demagoguery do not take over.” For Duque, “that is the great challenge.”

“I will work day by day to recover the economy, but at the same time I will work hard so that Colombians can have the best political debate, which is transparent and accurate. so that the decisions taken in 2022 are not based on polarization, demagoguery or populism“, stressed the national president.

In his speech, the head of state said that we all have to adapt to these new circumstances that the pandemic has generated worldwide.

And he added that all countries are going to have a loss in the investment rate or are going to be seriously affected.

“It is necessary to recognize that we are in a transitory phase and that the most important thing today is to recover economic growth with the new normal because we still do not have a date for the vaccine,” he said.

He stressed that fiscal reforms cannot be made in the midst of the pandemic, as that would be very risky.
