Due to its dimensions, it is classified as ‘potentially dangerous’.
The radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico recently published an image of the gigantic asteroid 52768 (1998 OR2), which on April 29 will reach its closest distance from Earth.
In their Twitter account, Radar Arecibo investigators pointed out that said asteroid apparently “he wears a mask“Last week, the Virtual Telescope of the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Italy also shared images of the 1998 OR2 on the move.”through the stars“
#TeamRadar and the @NAICobservatory staff are taking the proper safety measures as we continue observations. This week we have been observing near-Earth asteroid 1998 OR2, which looks like it’s wearing a mask! It’s at least 1.5 km across and is passing 16 lunar distances away! pic.twitter.com/X2mQJCT2Qg

That asteroid, discovered in 1998, will make its closest approach to our registered planet so far. It is estimated to be 4.1 kilometers long by 1.8 kilometers wide, which is why it is classified as ‘potentially dangerous’. However, it will pass 6.3 million kilometers from our planet, that is, more than 16 times the distance between Earth and the Moon, so it does not pose a threat.
